VIN Digits 1-3: Manufacturing Identifier

The first three digits identify the manufacturer and vehicle category. Rivian’s manufacturing plant is identified separately by digit 11.

All Rivian consumer vehicles are currently manufactured in Normal, Illinois, which is represented by VIN digit 11: N.

VIN Digit 4: Make/Line/Series

S = Rivian R1S
T = Rivian R1T

VIN Digit 5: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Brake System

G = 8,001–9,000 lbs.; hydraulic brakes
H = 9,001–10,000 lbs.; hydraulic brakes

For Rivian, digit 5 does not identify the body type. Body style is handled by digit 4: S for R1S, and T for R1T.

VIN Digit 6: Motor / Drivetrain / Battery

A = Quad-Motor AWD
B = Dual-Motor AWD
C = Tri-Motor AWD

For some model years, this digit may also correspond with battery pack configuration. For example, newer Rivian VIN filings further split drivetrain and battery combinations such as Dual-Motor AWD with Standard, Large, or Max Pack.

VIN Digit 7: Restraint System

A = Front airbags, side inflatable restraints, knee airbags, and seat belts for all seating positions

For Rivian, digit 7 identifies the restraint system. Drivetrain/motor configuration is handled by digit 6, not digit 7.

VIN Digit 8: Trim / Series

A = Adventure
E = Explore / Entry
L = Launch Edition
P = Premium
S = Special
C = R1 Fleet

For Rivian, digit 8 identifies the vehicle’s trim or series. Motor configuration is handled by digit 6.

VIN Digit 9: Check Digit

This is a variable checksum digit used to validate the VIN. It is calculated according to the standard VIN check digit formula required under 49 CFR § 565.15(c).

VIN Digit 10: Model Year

N = 2022
P = 2023
R = 2024
S = 2025
T = 2026

The 10th digit in a Rivian VIN indicates the vehicle’s model year, not necessarily the exact calendar year it was built. For Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles, this will usually be one of the codes above.

VIN Digit 11: Plant of Manufacture

N = Normal, Illinois

Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles are built at Rivian’s factory in Normal, Illinois.

VIN Digits 12-17: Unique serial number

Digits 12 through 17 are the vehicle’s unique production serial number.
