When you’re getting ready to drive a Tesla, proper tire pressure probably isn’t the first thing on your mind. But it can get to the top of your mental list pretty quickly if your low pressure indicator turns on, your range starts dropping, or a tire blows out.
Electric vehicles have some extra tire requirements thanks to the added battery pack weight and the increased amount of torque the tires experience on a regular basis. For Teslas, maintaining your wheels and preventing blowouts is essential to protecting yourself, your passengers, and, of course, your investment in a Tesla. After all, a Tesla is only worth the investment if it’s still rolling.
Quick safety note: this article is general tire-maintenance information, not a substitute for your Owner’s Manual, tire placard, tire manufacturer guidance, or a professional tire inspection. Always follow the cold tire pressure listed on your specific Tesla’s driver-side door pillar, especially if you have non-stock wheels, winter tires, aftermarket tires, heavy loads, towing needs, or Cybertruck All-Terrain tires. If you see tire damage, uneven wear, repeated pressure loss, a TPMS fault, or a sidewall issue, have the tire inspected by Tesla Service or a qualified tire shop before driving normally.
In this installment of our series Tesla Features Explained, we’re going to talk about why tire pressure is an important part of Tesla maintenance, how to check your Tesla’s tire pressure, and how to make tire pressure checks a habit.
Under Pressure: Why Your Tesla’s Tire Pressure Matters
Teslas have a bit of a reputation for wearing through tires quickly. With the instant torque available to them, Teslas can grind through their rubber at an astonishing rate if not properly maintained.
Underinflation is the most common maintenance cause of tire failure in Teslas. Underinflation causes tires to overheat, which increases cracking, tread separation, and the possibility of blowouts. Underinflation can also increase braking distance and reduce steering response, subsequently reducing your control in dangerous situations. The same actually goes for overinflation, since an overinflated tire has less surface area for grip when stopping and steering.
An underinflated tire could also affect your range. An NHTSA study suggests that low tire pressure can reduce your driving range by around 0.3% for every 1% reduction in tire pressure. For example, let’s assume we’re running a Model 3 at a recommended 42 psi. If you let the tires lose just 5% of that pressure, or about 2.1 psi, you might reduce your range by about 1.5%. Not a huge loss for one drive, but it can add up over time and gets worse the longer you go without properly inflating your tires.
Finally, have you noticed that your Tesla didn’t come with a spare tire? Without a spare, it’s definitely in every Tesla owner’s best interests to reduce the risk of tire failure. A flat without a nearby Service Center or tire shop can mean a dozen phone calls and hours of waiting before a suitable replacement tire can be located thanks to Tesla’s unusual tire requirements. This isn’t typically a big deal near major cities, but in many parts of the US, a Tesla-compatible tire can be over a hundred miles away.
And in 2026, this matters even more because Tesla’s lineup now includes the Cybertruck, which is heavy, powerful, and often used in ways that put extra stress on tires. Whether you drive a Model 3 commuter car or a Cybertruck loaded with gear, tire pressure is not just a tiny efficiency detail. It’s a safety, range, handling, and tire-life issue.
Tesla Tire Pressure by Model
Your Tesla’s tire pressure information is located on the inside of the driver’s side door. This number will give you the recommended cold tire pressure for your Tesla’s tires at the time of manufacture, and it can vary by wheel size, tire type, trim, load, and whether the vehicle is towing or carrying heavy cargo.
Please note: If you are using an alternative wheel set, Tesla Accessories wheels, winter tires, aftermarket wheels, aftermarket tires, or a non-stock tire size, follow the tire placard, Tesla’s current Owner’s Manual guidance, and the tire/wheel manufacturer’s documentation for the appropriate pressure. Don’t assume one Tesla owner’s number is the right number for your car.
Let’s run through typical pressure ranges and how to check each Tesla’s pressure by model:
Tesla Model S Tire Pressure
- Typical recommended cold pressure: commonly around 40-42 psi, depending on year, wheel, tire, and load
- Tesla Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS): conventional pressure sensors on many older cars; newer cars may vary by production year and configuration
- Note: Model S is now mainly a used/legacy Tesla story, so tire pressure guidance can vary substantially between early cars, refresh cars, Plaid cars, wheel sizes, and tire types.
How to Check Model S Tire Pressure via TPMS: On many older Model S vehicles, use the left scroll wheel on the steering wheel to select the tire pressure visualization, or use the touchscreen and go to Controls > Service. On newer software, the tire pressure screen also shows when the readings were last measured and may display the recommended cold pressures for that vehicle.
Tesla Model X Tire Pressure
- Typical recommended cold pressure: commonly around 40-42 psi, depending on year, wheel, tire, and load
- TPMS: conventional pressure sensors on many older cars; newer cars may vary by production year and configuration
- Note: Model X tires are often different sizes in the front and the back. For the Model X, it’s definitely a good idea to check pressure requirements for both sets of tires, especially if they are no longer stock.
How to Check Model X Tire Pressure via TPMS: On many Model X vehicles, place your thumb over the left scroll wheel and scroll until you see the tire pressure visualization. You can also select Controls > Service from the main touchscreen. Remember that readings may not update immediately if the vehicle has been sitting.
Tesla Model 3 Tire Pressure
- Typical recommended cold pressure: commonly around 42 psi on many Model 3 configurations, but always follow the driver’s door placard for your exact car
- TPMS: conventional 433 MHz pressure sensors on many 2017-2021 pre-refresh cars; Tesla Bluetooth sensors on many later Model 3 vehicles
- Note: Refreshed Model 3 trims, wheel sizes, and tire packages can vary, so the door placard matters more than a generic internet answer.
How to Check Model 3 Tire Pressure via TPMS: Using your main touchscreen, tire pressures may display in the cards area on the car status display, or you can go to Controls > Service. Tesla’s newer tire pressure screens show each tire’s pressure, when it was last measured, and the vehicle’s recommended cold tire pressure.
Tesla Model Y Tire Pressure
- Typical recommended cold pressure: commonly around 42 psi on many Model Y configurations, but always follow the driver’s door placard for your exact car
- TPMS: Tesla Bluetooth sensors on many Model Y vehicles
- Note: Model Y wheel/tire combinations vary, and newer lower-cost trims may have different equipment details, so verify the actual vehicle.
How to Check Model Y Tire Pressure via TPMS: Use the center touchscreen and view the tire pressure card, or go to Controls > Service. As with Model 3, newer software can display tire pressure, last-measured timing, and recommended cold pressure in the same area.
Tesla Cybertruck Tire Pressure
- Typical recommended cold pressure: Commonly around 50 psi, but always follow the Cybertruck tire placard and touchscreen guidance for your exact tire type, wheel package, and load
- TPMS: Cybertruck displays tire pressures in the vehicle visualization and can also show recommended cold pressures
- Note: Cybertruck is heavier than Tesla’s passenger cars and may be used for towing, hauling, off-road driving, and heavy-load situations. Tesla’s guidance can change depending on load and tire package, especially with All-Terrain tires.
How to Check Cybertruck Tire Pressure via TPMS: Cybertruck displays the pressure status of each tire in the vehicle visualization. The touchscreen also displays the recommended cold tire pressures, which is especially helpful because Cybertruck pressure guidance can depend on tire setup and use case. If you tow, carry heavy loads, or use All-Terrain tires, check the Owner’s Manual instead of relying on a generic number.
Tesla Tire Pressure Best Practices
While each Tesla comes equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), it’s important to remember that these sensors are not a replacement for checking tire pressure yourself. TPMS is great for alerts and in-car visibility, but a pressure warning usually means the tire is already meaningfully below the recommended level.
In late 2024, Tesla also issued an over-the-air recall for certain Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck vehicles related to a TPMS warning-light issue. That does not mean every Tesla TPMS reading is unreliable, but it is another reminder not to treat the dashboard as your only tire-maintenance tool. If something feels off, check manually.
The TPMS is a great reference while you are driving, but the sensors may not show fresh readings the moment you get into the car. Many Teslas need some driving time before pressure readings update. Tesla also recommends checking tires when cold, because a hot tire at or below the recommended cold pressure is dangerously underinflated.
Tesla recommends a regular manual tire air pressure check on all their vehicles. This keeps you aware of your tires’ condition and alert to any unusual loss in pressure or wear and tear.
With that in mind, here are few tips for keeping your Tesla’s tire pressure at optimum levels throughout the year:
Measure Before You Drive (Or 3 Hours After): It’s important to remember that you should manually check your tire pressure “cold.” This means that pressure measurements should be taken when you haven’t been driving for a few hours. After you’ve driven for more than a mile, your Tesla’s tires begin to heat up. Taking pressure measurements and inflating tires when they are warmed up after a drive may result in underinflated tires once they cool back down.
Use the Door Placard First: The driver’s door pillar is the best starting point for your specific Tesla. Internet ranges are useful for context, but the placard is tied to your vehicle’s original equipment. If your wheels or tires have changed, check Tesla’s guidance and the tire manufacturer’s recommendations.
Keep Compressed Air Handy: We always recommend keeping a portable air compressor in your Tesla. A good portable, digital air compressor makes getting the right psi simple and convenient.
Check Monthly (or Weekly): Since most tires lose about 1 psi per month, it’s a good idea to set aside one day a month to do a quick pressure check in a place with access to compressed air. If you drive a lot, live somewhere with big temperature swings, or have low-profile performance tires, weekly checks are not crazy.
Be Mindful of the Weather: In the colder months and in places that see large temperature swings, your Tesla’s tires can lose about 1 psi per 10 degree drop in the outdoor temperature, so you should do additional checks when cold fronts move through your area.
Don’t Ignore Repeated Pressure Loss: If one tire keeps dropping faster than the others, don’t just keep topping it off forever. A nail, bead leak, cracked wheel, valve issue, damaged TPMS sensor, or sidewall problem can turn into a bigger safety issue if ignored.
Adjust for Loads and Use Cases: This matters most for Cybertruck and Model X, but it can apply to any Tesla. Heavy cargo, towing, winter tires, aftermarket wheels, and performance tires may call for different pressure guidance. Check the manual and placard before long trips or heavy-load use.
Prevent Flat Spots: Even short-term storage can create flat spots in your Tesla’s tires, especially if those tires are underinflated. Inflate your tires to the maximum psi rating for storage and deflate to the recommended psi before driving again. This will help you prevent flat spots in your tires and reduce potential damage.
